Only a short post today because I spent most of it trying to study for the placement test I am having on Tuesday. I need to make it to the level 4 class at the least to ensure that I will be able to transfer the credit needed to graduate. Very nervous about it.
I just wanted to make a few comments.
1) The konbini is amazing and I wish the ones in America were this awesome. I may have my meals from there everyday now when I am just eating at the dorm. Cheap, filling, delicious, and way healthier than fast food. I love the onigiri (rice cakes). I can get a good-sized bentou (essentially a Japanese lunchbox), an onigiri, and a drink for about 500 yen (less than 6 dollars).
2) The Japanese style toilets still make me very uncomfortable. Every time I walk by them in the dorm bathroom, I can't stop myself from wondering just how the hell one would even be able to use them. They are sunken into the floor. A guy would have no problem, but as a girl it would just be really awkward.
3) We sat at the dining tables in the konbini today to eat dinner and the Indiana Jones theme song played on the radio. Awesome.
4) 1 yen coins look and feel like fake play money.
5) I finally figured out how to get hot water from the shower! Such a simple pleasure to have, yet missed very much when you don't.
6) Trash not only has to be thrown out presorted (burnables, plastic bottles, aluminum cans) but it also has to be placed in a special bag, which is different for each municipality. They won't take your trash if you use the wrong ones.
7) The weirdest feeling I have gotten while here was walking down the street and noticing for the first time how many Asians there were everywhere. This may seem obvious to everyone else (Ummm, you're in an Asian country....of course there are Asians everywhere...), but when you grow up as an Asian in a country surrounded predominantly by white people, finding yourself among others that you actually blend in with everywhere is a really strange and new feeling.
8) Seven is an unlucky number in Japan so I decided to add this random fact to end at 8.
Gotta wake up early if I wanna have some washoku. Night!
